Conservative 8ft stock cutting plan

10 working sticks in the conservative cutting plan. Buy at least 10 sticks to meet both that plan and the selected linear allowance. Not an optimized minimum.

Longest pieces are placed first. Each piece reserves two 45° cuts: 2 × √2 × blade kerf; end defects and extra practice cuts are not included. The 10% option is a linear allowance, not 10% more sticks on top of this plan.

How this particular wall divides

The 4 columns leave 3 interior gaps. The two side margins use 16 inches and the gaps use 9 inches, leaving 71 inches for the frame outlines. Dividing that space by 4 gives an outer box width of 17.75 in (≈ 17 3/4″).

Width = (96 − 2 × 8 − 3 × 3) / 4 = 17.75 in
Height = (96 − 2 × 10 − 1 × 4) / 2 = 36 in

The two rows are separated by 4 inches of clear wall. Each row starts from its own top mark in the table; keep the gap outside both trim outlines. The top and bottom margins are each 10 inches. The frames are taller than they are wide, with an outer height-to-width ratio of 2.028. Use these proportions as a tape mock-up, rather than assuming they suit the furniture on your wall.

Centerline and boundary checks

The center of the wall falls in the clear gap between the two middle columns. The first outer left edge is 8 in (≈ 8″). The last column starts at 70.25 in (≈ 70 1/4″) and ends at 88 in (≈ 88″), leaving the intended 8-inch right margin. The final row ends at 86 in (≈ 86″). Check these far edges from the same origin you used for the first box.

The 1-inch face width reduces each inner dimension by 2 inches. That leaves 15.75 in (≈ 15 3/4″) by 34 in (≈ 34″) of exposed wall within each outline. The listed cut lengths still use the outside long points. If you want a particular inner opening instead, account for both sides of the profile when you revise the outer geometry.

What the material count means here

This layout needs 16 horizontal pieces at 17.75 in (≈ 17 3/4″) and 16 vertical pieces at 36 in (≈ 36″). There are 32 individual pieces, each with two 45-degree ends. Their combined finished long-point length is 860 inches, or 71.667 feet. The 10% linear allowance adds 86 inches to that budget and produces a 10-stick length estimate.

The longest piece is 36 in (≈ 36″). With a 0.125 in (≈ 1/8″) blade and 0.354 in (≈ 3/8″) reserved for the two 45-degree cuts on each piece, the longest-first cutting plan uses 10 working sticks, leaving 88.686 inches of combined tails after kerf. Those tails may be several separate pieces and cannot be treated as one long board. The combined purchase figure is 10 8ft sticks. Turning off the 10% allowance changes the linear figure to 9 sticks and the combined purchase figure to 10; the working plan still controls the purchase because whole pieces must fit.

Two alternatives worth taping on the wall

Adding one column gives 5 across and 10 frames in total. With the same margins and gaps, each becomes 13.6 in (≈ 13 5/8″) wide by 36 in (≈ 36″) high. The finished material total changes to 82.667 feet, and its combined 8ft purchase estimate is 12 sticks. More columns make narrower panels while adding vertical sides; they do not simply divide the current cut list into smaller pieces.

Keeping the current counts and making each side margin one inch larger changes the outer width to 17.25 in (≈ 17 1/4″), a reduction of 0.5 in (≈ 1/2″) per frame. Its left outer edge shifts to 9 inches. The height stays at 36 in (≈ 36″) and the total becomes 71 feet. This option gives the wall edges more breathing room without moving the top and bottom boundaries.

Before using this cut list

These are calculated examples, not measured installations. Confirm the full 96 × 96 inch area, the actual trim face width, and the locations of cover plates or casing. Mark one frame, dry-fit its corners, and confirm its outer size before cutting the rest. Fractions are rounded display values; use the independent marks in the table so small rounding differences do not collect at the far margin. The stock plan assumes clean 96-inch sticks and the entered kerf. Allow separately for defective ends or additional practice pieces.
